Farmworkers Gather in 13 California Cities to Ask Why Governor Newsom Won’t Meet With Them on Cesar Chavez Day – UFW
“Why doesn’t Governor Gavin Newsom meet on Cesar Chavez Day with elected farmworker leaders on a vital issue that directly impacts their lives?” asks United Farm Workers President Teresa Romero. This issue brings together farmworkers to lobby the governor of 13 rural and urban California cities on March 31, along with union leaders, elected officials and a wide range of supporters.
These humane billboards of the farmworker movement and other group actions are happening simultaneously throughout the day across the state, from Los Angeles, Sacramento and San Francisco to rural communities on the Central Coast and in the Central, Coachella and Imperial Valleys.
All actions call on Governor Newsom to support AB 2183, the Agriculture Labor Relations Voting Choice Act (Assemblymember Stone). The bill, reintroduced this year with more than 50 legislative co-sponsors, would provide more choice in how farmworkers can vote in union elections. A similar measure passed the Legislative Assembly, but was abruptly vetoed by Governor Newsom last September.
“Agricultural workers feed the nation, but we are deprived of the basic rights that other workers enjoy. We deserve to vote where we don’t have supervisors and contractors pressuring us,” says winery worker Vianey Enriquez. “It’s impossible to have free choice when you have the supervisor who threatened to fire anyone who voted for the union who fixes you.”
